Summary
The Psychotherapist Law: 53 Years before and 5 Years after Its Enactment A historical review of psychotherapy after World War II and five years after the psychotherapist law, enacted in 1999 in the Federal Republic of Germany, addresses professional, political, legal, psychotherapy-related and scientific aspects of the development. Foundations of influential associations are mentioned. Emphasis is placed on the proceedings in behavior therapy. The passing of the law for psychotherapists led to new structures supporting the role of psychological psychotherapy and child and adolescent psychotherapy as independent health professions. Of special importance are the new regulations for training and licensing, the integration of psychological psychotherapy and child and adolescent psychotherapy in the health care system, the foundation of boards for psychotherapists and the scientific committee for psychotherapy.
