Submission

Authors must read and adhere to every aspect of these Guidelines, or manuscripts will be returned immediately and will not be further considered. Papers can be accepted from any area of primatology, including behaviour, evolutionary biology, morphology, physiology and palaeontology; other topics may also be considered at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

Our overall criteria are high quality and whether papers are likely to be of interest to a general primatological audience. Papers of more factual content will be considered only if they are of unusual and immediate interest, such as discoveries of new species. Papers of any length can be accepted for publication.

All are subject to full peer review and the same standards will be applied to all. However, authors who need to exceed 5,000 words should contact the Editor-in-Chief directly, before submission. We welcome Technical Communications and particularly encourage submission of Reviews, but authors should again contact the Editor-in-Chief directly before submission.

Only original papers written in English, German or French are considered. Papers written in English should use UK English (that is British or International English) and follow spelling in The Oxford English Dictionary, except for authors in North American institutions, who may use US English if desired. An abstract in English must be included. An additional abstract in French, Portuguese or Spanish may be included by authors from habitat countries (defined as countries where natural populations of free-ranging primates live) where these languages are used.

Names, postal and e-mail addresses of four experts in the appropriate area of research should accompany each manuscript. Referees suggested should not be from the same institution as the author.

Manuscripts should be submitted online

Online Manuscript Submission

or as e-mail attachment (the preferred word-processing package is MS-Word) to the Editorial Office:

Do not send manuscripts or revised manuscripts to any other address. Do not address queries concerning progress to any other address.

We are very conscious of the need to reduce turnaround times. In order to do so, and in fairness to other authors, we must ask authors to return revised manuscripts to us within two months of receipt of the reviewers' comments and editor's decision letter. If this is not possible, it is essential for authors to notify us in writing of any delay, with reasons for the delay, within these time limits.

Ethical Guidelines

'Folia Primatologica' requires that all papers reporting field studies in which animals have been trapped, darted or otherwise handled, and papers reporting studies of captive animals, other than purely observational studies, should include in the text a clear statement of the justi-fi-cation for any animal contact and/or invasive procedures.

When animals are euthanised at the end of experiments, justification in terms of a clear benefit to the health or well-being of humans and/or non-human primates is essential, even in conference abstracts. It is not sufficient to state that procedures were according to regulations of an internal ethical committee.

Guidelines for Zoological Nomenclature

'Folia Primatologica' requires that authors adhere exactly to the provisions of the International Code For Zoological Nomenclature. This is particularly important when making claims for the existence of a new taxon.

Conditions

All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.

Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance.

Accepted papers become the permanent property of 'Folia Primatologica' and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher.

It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

Arrangement

Lines should be numberd on the margin.

Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors' names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head. A count of the number of words in the manuscript, including main text, references and legends for figures and tables should be given.
NB: Authors wishing to preserve the phonetic meaning of diacritics (PubMed reduces diacritics to their root characters) must spell their names accordingly when submitting manuscripts (e.g. Müller should be Mueller).

Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.

Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 6–10 key words in English is essential.

Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 10 lines in English.

Footnotes: Avoid footnotes as far as possible. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page.

Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 144 x 196 mm) or provide crop marks. B/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800–1,200 dpi.

Color Illustrations

Online edition: Color illustrations are reproduced free of charge. In the print version, the illustrations are reproduced in black and white. Please avoid referring to the colors in the text and figure legends.

Print edition: Up to 6 color illustrations per page can be integrated within the text at CHF 760.00 per page.

References

In the text, give author's name and date of publication in brackets, with et al. for three or more authors. Multiple references should be listed chronologically. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically (except that two-authored papers are listed before multi-authored papers with the same first author) and should include only those publications cited in the text. Work accepted for publication may be listed as 'in press'. 'Unpublished observations' or 'personal communications' cited in the text should not be listed in the references.

Please punctuate and format references exactly as in the following examples.

Papers published in periodicals:
Andau PM, Elamah PO, Oates JF (1988). The bushmeat trade in southwestern Nigeria: A case study. Human Ecology 16: 199–208.

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

S. Karger Publishers supports DOIs as unique identifiers for articles. A DOI number will be printed on the title page of each article. DOIs can be useful in the future for identifying and citing articles published online without volume or issue information. More information can be found at www.doi.org

Author's ChoiceTM

Karger's Author's ChoiceTM service broadens the reach of your article and gives all users worldwide free and full access for reading, downloading and printing at www.Karger.com. The option is available for a one-time fee of CHF 2,750.00, which is a permissible cost in grant allocation. More information can be found at www.karger.com/authors_choice.

NIH-Funded Research

The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) mandates under the NIH Public Access Policy that final, peer-reviewed manuscripts appear in its digital database within 12 months of the official publication date. As a service to authors, Karger submits the final version of your article on your behalf to PubMed Central. For those selecting our premium Author's ChoiceTM service, we will send your article immediately upon publishing, accelerating the accessibility of your work without the usual embargo. More details on NIH's Public Access Policy is available here.

Self-Archiving

Karger permits authors to archive their pre-prints (i.e. pre-refereeing) or post-prints (i.e. final draft post-refereeing) on their personal or institution's servers, provided the following conditions are met: Articles may not be used for commercial purposes, must be linked to the publisher's version, and must acknowledge the publisher's copyright. Authors selecting Karger's Author's ChoiceTM feature, however, are also permitted to archive the final, published version of their article, which includes copyediting and design improvements as well as citation links.

Proofs

Unless indicated otherwise, proofs are sent to the first-named author and should be returned with the least possible delay. Alterations made in proofs, other than the correction of printer's errors, are charged to the author. No page proofs are supplied.

Reprints

Order forms and a price list are sent with the proofs. Orders submitted after the issue is printed are subject to considerably higher prices.
