Summary
Obesity Surgery: History - Present - Future The surgical treatment of morbid obesity has been changed since the first effective procedure. The historical survey, however, demonstrates clearly that no single procedure can solve all problems associated with obesity. There are patients with very good success and long-term weight loss. But in superobese patients techniques with a combination of food restriction and malabsorption seem to enable a better long-term effect on body weight. In this way the history comes back to the beginning of bariatric surgery without a repetition of the classical malabsorptive procedures such as jejunoileostomy. Copyright © 2003 S.
