Abstract: Central sleep apnea and hypoventilation syndromes are
increasingly important clinical entities, in part because of their
associations with pervasive conditions such as heart failure
and obesity. While disruption of ventilatory control appears
to contribute to these disorders, much remains unknown
about pathophysiologic mechanisms and optimal treatment
methods. This chapter explores some of these issues in the
context of the most recent research data, and also discusses
some less common disorders of ventilatory control that may
be encountered by the sleep medicine specialist.
