ISCN 1995
An International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (1995)
Recommendations of the International Standing Committee on Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature, Memphis, Tenn., October 1994
Published in collaboration with 'Cytogenetics and Cell Genetics'
Plus fold-out: 'The Normal Human Karyotype G- and R-bands'

Editor(s):   Mitelman, F. (Lund)

   In preparation: ISCN 2009more information

The nomenclature standard still valid in the 21st century

This publication combines and extends the now classic system of human cytogenetic nomenclature that has been prepared by expert committees and published in, or in collaboration with, Cytogenetics and Cell Genetics since 1963.
Finalized by the current ISCN committee and its advisors at the meeting in Memphis, Tennessee in October 1994, ISCN 1995 updates, corrects and combines all previous human cytogenetic nomenclature recommendations into one systematically organized publication. It thus supersedes the previous compilations in ISCN 1985 and its supplement, ISCN 1991, the Guidelines for Cancer Cytogenetics.

Additions made in ISCN ‘95
  • gives additional examples of usage

  • recommends a new system for describ-ing the results of in situ hybridization studies

  • contains composite karyotype illustra-tions of prophase and metaphase chromosomes at six different stages of band resolution, arranged side-by-side

  • contains an 850 band digitized and dif-ferentially shaded ideogram based on measurements of the bands and reflecting their staining intensities
ISCN 1995 also features a detachable fold-out of ‘The Normal Human Karyotype, G- and R-bands’ which is a useful aid for students, technicians and cytogeneticists
