Special Issue: Mineral and Electrolyte Metabolism 1999, Vol. 25, No. 4-6
This publication addresses issues associated with nutrition and metabolism in renal disease and renal failure, such as inflammation, oxidant stress, suppressed appetite, and causes and treatment of malnutrition. Key topics include the contribution of inflammation and oxidants to protein-energy malnutrition, atherosclerosis and the morbidity and mortality associated with malnutrition, as well as papers on the mechanisms of protein degradation, vitamin physiology and metabolism. It concludes with discussions of the contribution of nutrients and growth factors to erythropoiesis and to the hematopoietic response to erythropoietin, mechanisms of uremic toxicity and assessment and treatment of malnutrition in chronic renal failure.
This publication will be of special interest to nephrologists in general, as well as to renal and general dietitians, specialists in nutrition, internists and pediatricians.
